About the Item
A magnificent and very entertaining gold-plated wild-boar themed carving / chopping / cutting board with matching carving knife and meat fork, made by Valenti in Spain, c. 1970. Most similar carving set examples are only silver plated. That this is gold plated makes it particularly luxurious.
The carving board has a gold-plated head of a wild boar or pig at one end that serves as the perfect handle. The boar’s head is beautifully detailed and has a very tactile quality. The hunting-themed carving knife and meat fork also have boar’s head details to the ends of the handles, as if they were a little pair of boarlets. The handles of both the knife and fork are also gold-plated. They are both stamped ‘Valenti’, while the stainless steel blade of the knife is also etched ‘Valenti’. The board is also stamped ‘Valenti – Made in Spain’ to its reverse. The gold plating is in excellent condition throughout.
The cutting board is a solid piece of walnut with a channel carved into its circumference for catching the juices from the joint being carved. The surface has some old signs of use, all commensurate with its age. It has been thoroughly cleaned and re-oiled to make it food safe. Both the knife and the fork are of generous proportions, well suited for serving a hearty meal. It can also be used for serving cold meats, cheese, or tapas.
This is a hugely attractive hunting-themed mid century carving set, something that is sure to be a conversation piece at any table. It is in beautiful condition.
Valenti is a renowned Spanish design firm based in Barcelona. Originally founded as a family-run silversmith in 1798, the company developed into a prize-winning design house in the 20th century under the direction of Fernando Valentí Clúa. It is a well-known marque for distinctive and high quality mid-century design that continues to retail across the world in cities such as Rome, Paris, London, New York and Tokyo.
