About the Item

Table centrepiece (surtout de table), Paris, c. 1825–1830 This extraordinary centrepiece was created in Paris around 1825/1830, at a time when French table culture was experiencing a revival. Such pieces were an integral part of aristocratic and upper-class dining and were considered a visible expression of taste, status, and prestige. This example impresses with its particularly fine fire-gilded bronze workmanship – a complex technique perfected in Parisian bronze workshops. The filigree, openwork balustrade, adorned with richly decorated floral ornaments, classical relief motifs, and small angel figures (putti), is emblematic of the shift from the late classicist Empire style to the more ornamental aesthetic of the Restoration era. The centrepiece is equipped with six finely crafted candlesticks, evenly distributed around the edge to create a festive lighting effect. The central element is the original mirrored glass plate, which reflects the candlelight, lending a special depth and brilliance to the festive table setting. As well as being decorative, Surtout de Table pieces often served to structure the table and act as a stage for figurative decorative elements, small sculptures or floral arrangements. Paris was a leading centre for the production of such table centrepieces, especially between 1820 and 1830. Workshops such as those of Pierre-Philippe Thomire and Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot shaped the aesthetics of these objects, blending technical sophistication with a neoclassical design language and ornamental richness. Measuring 125 cm in length, 66 cm in depth and 19.5 cm in height, this Surtout de Table is a prime example of early 19th-century French craftsmanship and a striking testament to the grandeur and formality of refined dining traditions.
