First Period Worcester Porcelain Polychrome Tiered Sweetmeat Stand with Sea Shells, Circa 1768-70 This exceptional and rare First Period Worcester porcelain sweetmeat stand exemplifies the rococo period's fascination with the natural world. Executed between 1768 and 1770, this centerpiece is a masterful display of the factory's technical and artistic prowess during its most innovative phase. The stand is conceived as a fanciful marine grotto, constructed with three tiers of gracefully upturned scallop shells. These shells, which serve as receptacles, are delicately painted with scattered polychrome flowers in the Chinese famille rose style, a testament to the enduring influence of East Asian aesthetics on European porcelain. The central stem is naturalistically modeled and encrusted with an assortment of seashells and coral, showcasing the period's delight in trompe-l'œil effects and exotic naturalism. This form, often referred to as a "shell-moulded table centerpiece," was intended as a magnificent ornamental object for the dessert course. As noted by Simon Spero and John Sandon in Worcester Porcelain, 1751-1790: The Zorensky Collection (p. 323, #407), the elaborate painted decoration would have rendered such pieces unsuitable for pickles or other wet foods. A 1769 Worcester factory sale catalogue lists "A curious stand for the centre of a dessert, decorated with shells, Etc.," which sold for a considerable one pound, three shillings, underscoring the high value and status of these centerpieces. A similar, though not identical, example with ten shells resides in the prestigious collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (Accession No. O336666), further highlighting the significance of this form. Dimensions: 8 inches high x 10 ¼ inches wide x 9 inches deep Condition: The stand is in excellent condition for its age, with only a minor, invisibly repaired chip to the rim of one upper and one lower shell bowl.
