About the Item

A stately and statement making French 19th century Belle Epoque period Rouge Griotte marble and Ormolu centerpiece/urn, in the manner of Barbedienne. This large scale centerpiece is raised on a marble base while being supported by an Ormolu base plate. Atop the marble base is a marble socle with a dentil patterned Ormolu bottom edge and a reeded band upper edge. The urn above is decorated with scrolling Ormolu acanthus leaves and eight coins joined by twisted rope designs around the front of the neck that represent specific French towns/cities. Each of these locations specializes in either the production of iron and steel products for various industries, including railroads and the French navy. This stunning urn is a trophy to the hard working individuals within each of these industries and was awarded on October 3rd, 1864. Around the upper edge is an Ormolu band of dentil patterns with intermittent equally spaced palm leaves.
