German Silver Nef by Neresheimer Sohne Hallmarked "N" for Neresheimer with Hanau silver marks Circa 1890 This monumental silver nef is a spectacular example of 19th-century German silverwork. The vessel, crafted by notable Hanau smiths Neresheimer and Sons, is not only covered with incredible detailing and decoration, but it is also remarkably still fully functional. This nef can hold wine inside the ship's cargo and pour it from the bow, a highly rare and exceptionally delightful feature of these objects. Complete with billowing sails, flags, an anchor and a full crew at work, the ship displays incredible chased and repoussé mythological scenes on the exterior of its hull. Holding the ship aloft are marvelously formed fish rising above the tumultuous waves, partially concealing the nef's wheels, which allow the vessel to be rolled along the dinner table between guests. A majestic object of intricate workmanship and stunning detail, this nef would have been the show-stopping centerpiece at the dinner parties of the wealthy elite. Founded in 1890, Neresheimer and Sons were the most renowned of the Hanau silversmiths working at the end of the 19th century. The German city was famous for its silver industry which was based on imitating antique silver pieces in popular historical styles. Like many Hanau silversmiths, Neresheimer punched their work with what are called "pseudo-marks" that resembled English hallmarks, almost certainly for easier export to France and England. Elegant and precisely crafted, Neresheimer's objects exhibit artistry of the highest quality, and they are among the finest silver items ever produced in Hanau. 27 1/2" high x 24 1/2" wide x 6" deep
