About the Item
A large and exquisite pair of antique French gilt bronze and cut-crystal Baccarat-style centerpieces. Each centerpiece is constructed with a wide, circular crystal bowl, cut throughout with diamond and fan patterns. The rim is scalloped, with alternating fan motifs creating a continuous border around the edge. The bowls taper down into a stepped crystal transition, joining to a gilt bronze collar decorated with a band of engraved patterns.
The stems rise from cylindrical crystal sections, also cut with diamond lattice designs, set between gilt bronze collars at the top and bottom. These collars are worked with incised borders of foliate ornament and delicate ribbed edging. The cylindrical bodies rest on square gilt bronze plinths, each corner applied with classical laurel wreath mounts in low relief. The bases are plain on the sides but retain their original gilded surface, supporting the weight of the crystal elements securely.
These centerpieces are in the style of Baccarat production from the 19th century, combining heavy cut crystal with finely cast and chased gilt bronze mounts. Baccarat was known for producing luxury glassware and mounted crystal objects, often incorporating elaborate cutting techniques and richly gilded bronze supports.
