This pair of gilt bronze tazzas presents a symmetrical and balanced design typical of early 19th-century French neoclassicism. Each tazza features a circular bowl with a reeded rim and a fluted underside supported by two opposing dolphins rising from a cylindrical base. The structure is solidly proportioned, combining the vertical rhythm of the supporting figures with the broad, shallow contour of the top section. The cylindrical base of each tazza is decorated with an applied emblem featuring a double-headed eagle above a Latin ribbon scroll reading “PATRIA CARA CARIOR LIBERTAS.” The motto translates to “Liberty is dearer than one’s beloved homeland,” expressing the principle that freedom surpasses all other loyalties. The double-headed eagle, a symbol rooted in Byzantine and later European heraldry, represents unity of authority and power, often associated with vigilance and dual sovereignty.
