About the Item

A Large Pair of "Sevres" Biscuit Porcelain Putti Decorated Centerpieces/Vases/Cashe Pots with Gilt Rams Head Handles. Each vase is cylindrical in form, tapering slightly at the base and featuring twin ram’s head handles modeled in high relief and finished in 24k gold. A continuous garland of frolicking putti in biscuit relief encircles the midsection, each figure holding festoons of flowers in rhythmic procession. The upper band is encircled with a molded frieze of white scrollwork over a lavender ground, bordered above and below by 24K gilt bands. The rim and foot of each vase are also edged in gilt, visually anchoring the decorative scheme. The vases are made of hard-paste porcelain in biscuit (unglazed) finish, a technique frequently employed by Sèvres for sculptural works in the Neoclassical taste. The crisp modeling of the putti and ram’s heads reflects the factory's emphasis on precision casting and hand-finishing during this period. Biscuit porcelain was favored for its matte surface and ability to mimic marble. The applied gilding and polychrome enamel bands would have been added in separate firings, in accordance with standard multi-stage production practices. The ram’s head handles recall classical sacrificial motifs often reused in decorative arts of the late 1800s. Each bears the interlaced double “L” mark enclosing “AA” in blue enamel beneath the base.
