About the Item

Salve or salve with a base. Silver. Zaragoza, 17th century. With contrast and engraving marks. Circular plate with a raised rim decorated with four ovals containing birds, alternating with reclining C-shapes (with vegetal motifs inside) in alternating positions, and thin ovals with rhombuses inside every other pair. The base is plain, and features a bird in a circle surrounded by reclining C-shapes open towards the center, with vegetal motifs inside, and rhombuses beneath the smaller ones, which alternate with the larger ones. Outside this central composition and along the rim, there is a band of waves. It retains some gilding. It is slightly elevated by a simple circular base. It features contrasting marks on the lower part (base and plate). The contrasting mark that also appears on the lower part of the upper plate has been identified as originating from Zaragoza, Spain. Stylistically, it is reminiscent of, for example, two pieces in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid, Spain: a fountain by Agustín de Cuesta (Granada, Spain, first third of the 17th century; inventory 2496) and another from Tudela made by Noval in the second quarter of the 17th century (inventory 2467). Interestingly, neither of these two features figurative elements. A similar decoration can be seen on a Castilian pyx dated between 1575 and 1600 (National Archaeological Museum of Madrid, inventory 19659). Weight: 478 grams. · Size: 22x22x4 cm International Buyers – Please Note: for those articles that need Export Permits (those older than 100 years), the obtaining of the Permit will be processed without additional expenses (if you choose the seller sends it to you), but the period for the obtention of it may vary from 10 to 35 days.
