About the Item
Salvilla. Silver. Santander, Spain, late 18th century.
With contrast markings.
A silver serving platter in its natural color, with legs formed by architectural elements combined with vegetal motifs (both of classical inspiration), and a top plate with a profile of mitered curves that translate into sharp edges at the rim, which is enhanced with several smooth moldings. Stylistically, the piece corresponds to a very common fashion in Spanish silverware of the second half of the 18th century. The hallmark depicting the tower and sailing ship belongs to the city of Santander, where a silversmith with a mark reading "SALMON" worked as a true assayer. Very little information about this silversmith is available. A writing set by Salvador Seco, dated between 1800 and 1820, is preserved in the National Museum of Decorative Arts (inventory CE19536) bearing the same hallmark. The other hallmark likely corresponds to that of the silversmith J. Feixoo, active in the last third of the 18th century (whom some experts consider a true assayer).
