About the Item
Made in England circa 1890 by Walker
Hall of Sheffield, this antique silver plated gong is mounted on a polished oak base and supported by a pair of natural cow horn uprights with silver plated mounts. The circular gong hangs from a chain between the horns, and the original striker is present, with a turned wooden handle and padded head.
The combination of organic and polished materials—cow horn, oak, and silver plate—reflects a late Victorian sensibility for bold contrasts and decorative utility. The form is well-balanced and sculptural, with a strong presence whether in use or on display.
Walker
Hall were among the leading silversmiths and electroplaters of their period, producing a broad range of domestic and presentation wares. This example is typical of their work at the end of the 19th century, combining traditional craftsmanship with an eye for theatrical design.
