About the Item

A highly decorative Art Deco ceramic jug by Burleigh Ware, produced by Burgess Leigh in England around the 1930s. This striking example of tropical revival style merges bold form with detailed relief work, capturing the era’s fascination with exoticism in decorative arts. The body is divided into three registers: the base encircled with a frieze of elephants in low relief, the middle section with tropical foliage, and the uppermost register featuring stylised long-necked birds, likely cranes or swans. The curled handle, shaped like a palm frond, is embellished with a vertical row of miniature elephants. Finished in a luminous mint green glaze with beige highlights that accentuate the sculptural quality of the relief, the jug measures 23.5 cm tall, 18 cm wide, and 12.5 cm deep. Stamped to the underside with the Burleigh Ware Burgess Leigh mark and mould number 202. In very good vintage condition with minor age wear. A collectible example of 1930s British ceramics, where Art Deco meets tropical fantasy.

Art Deco Ceramic Athens Vase by Thomas Forester Sons, England, 1930s
By Thomas Forester Sons
Located in Glasgow, GB
An original Art Deco ceramic vase by Thomas Forester Sons, crafted in Staffordshire, England during the early 1930s. This distinctive piece belongs to the firm’s ‘Athens’ collection—a short-run series now highly regarded among collectors of British ceramics and Art Deco pottery. The vase is defined by its elongated tubular profile, flaring subtly to form a softly bulging centre. Its surface is decorated with rows of acanthus leaves in pale blue relief, curling rhythmically around the body. The crisp blue detailing sits against a backdrop of deep russet and ochre glazes, a palette typical of Forester’s output in the early 20th century and evocative of the broader Art Deco design movement in Britain. Standing 26 cm tall with a diameter of 14 cm, the vase is stamped to the base with the Phoenix Ware...
