About the Item

The Kabylie is a mountainous region in current northern Algeria, home to the Kabyle people, a large Amazigh ethnic group with a distinct language and rich cultural heritage. Pottery making in Kabylie is traditionally a craft practiced by women. The knowledge and skills are passed down through generations.   The geometric patterns are a vital part of Kabyle identity and carry deep cultural meaning. The interpretation of these symbols can be complex and sometimes specific to a particular family or village. Kabyle pottery is more than just utilitarian; it is an art form that expresses the history, beliefs, and aesthetics of the Kabyle people. These objects are often treasured possessions and can be part of dowries or used in ceremonies. Research suggests that this pot comes from the Djurdjura region, south of Tizi Ouzou and dates from the early to mid-20th century.
