1960's Japanese round charger, no visible mark This ceramic plate displays design characteristics similar to the works of Shoji Hamada (1894-1978), a renowned Japanese potter and a key figure in the Mingei (folk craft) movement.
Hamada’s work emphasized simple, functional forms that could be used in daily life. This plate has a traditional round form, suitable for serving or display, aligning with Hamada’s philosophy of blending beauty and function.
The design features sweeping, abstract brush strokes. Hamada frequently used freehand brushwork to create patterns that were both dynamic and organic, often using simple black or brown glazes to create contrast with a neutral background.
The thick, glossy finish and slight unevenness in the glaze application are typical of handmade ceramics from this period, reflecting a focus on organic, human-made beauty over machine perfection.

Literature:
Artist Lewis Stein (1945-2022) was an original SOHO pioneer working and collecting from his Broome Street loft over a five decade career. Inspired by artists like Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, he started taking common household objects, like cleavers and hammers, and painting them in bright garish colors. In the late 1960s, he met dealer Dick Bellamy, who introduced his work to the gallerists who gave him his first exposure, including David Whitney in New York, Nicholas Wilder in Los Angeles, and Rolf Ricke in Cologne. A practitioner of Zen Buddhism, Stein made his first of many trips to mainland China in 1975, where he discovered and made an aesthetic connection to traditional Chinese Arts. Over the decades Stein amassed a formidable collection of Asian artifacts and a reputation for scholarly connoisseurship.

A truly gorgeous, sumptuously, richly, and darkly glazed, hand-decorated large Japanese studio pottery charger. The craftsmanship is exquisite. The piece radiates in the light and features an abstract trailed glaze design. The work is very reminiscent of Japanese master potters Shoji Hamada and Toshiko Takaezu (the previous owner lived half of each year in Hawaii where Toshiko lived and collected both her and Hamada's works).
Possible marker's impressed mark/ chop signature along the edge of the lower rim (please see photos).
