About the Item

Antique ironstone set of cup and saucer feature hand-painted decor with abstract geometric borders on rims in blue, green, orange, and gold, and Arts and Crafts style decor with flowering branches and butterflies in similar colors; pairs of flying dragons on the cup add a touch of Chinoiserie influence to the pieces. The saucer is marked with impressed "Ashworth Real Ironstone China" stamp, printed brown "Royal Coat of Arms" and "Richard Briggs Boston" marks, and overglaze decorator/model mark in handwriting; the cup is marked with brown printed crown and ribbon mark. Both Ashworth marks were in use since 1862, and the absence of word "England" indicates that the pieces were made before 1891. Overall, marks date the set to 1862-1891. Richard Briggs was founded as Sumners Co. in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1798; Richards Briggs inherited and renamed the business in 1861. The store was known as an importer and vendor of fine European (mostly French and English) porcelain, glass, and decor items, such as lamps; it closed in 1946. The set will make a great gift to a collector or design enthusiast, and will be a perfect addition to a wide range of tablescapes and various interiors, from Traditional to Victorian, Country Modern, Chinoiserie, Transitional, English Country, Collected, or Contemporary.
