About the Item
A fabulous mashup of Art Deco and 20th century chinoiserie, this rare and vivid tile, in shades of turquoise and cerulean, was made by Lulu Scott Backus in Rochester, New York. Backus had studied under the famous Charles Binns, who established America's first ceramics department at Alfred University, and later she taught at the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (later named the Rochester Institute of Technology). She served as the director of the Institute's craft and ceramic department from 1918-1952, when she retired. She was known for her colorful and experimental glazes, very much evident in this piece.
