Boldly designed and brilliantly glazed in tones of turquoise-aqua, jet black, white and gold, this dish sports an exotic phoenix bird resting on a filigreed tree branch, with one wing raised high. The colors are glorious, especially the full-bodied turquoise of the background. The artist was Waylande Gregory, one of America's greatest sculptors and ceramicists before and after World War II.
