About the Item
Hand-crafted ceramic cookie jar was created in 1986 by American studio ceramicist Carol Bifford. Signed, dated, and numbered #148, this work comes from a small limited-edition series produced by Bifford during the mid-1980s.
The piece depicts a woman holding a slice of watermelon, rendered with expressive modeling and finished in a bright, high-gloss glaze. Unlike the mass-produced mid-century cookie jars that inspired its form, this example was created in a small studio casting environment, giving it the individuality and sculptural presence characteristic of Bifford’s work.
The underside bears the impressed signature “Carol Bifford,” the copyright date ’86, and the edition number 148. A substantial piece at 11 inches tall with a 7.5-inch diameter, it displays beautifully as a functional cookie jar or as a piece of late-20th-century American folk ceramic art.
This work fits within the broader tradition of American studio pottery and folk ceramics that reinterpret historical forms—pieces now appreciated for their craftsmanship, rarity, and cultural context.
