About the Item

Dutch White Delft Gadrooned Charger Netherlands, late 17th Century A large and finely crafted white Delft ceramic charger featuring a gadrooned convex rim, typical of Dutch decorative ceramics of the late 17th century. The gadrooning—a series of raised, convex ridges—adds a dynamic sculptural quality to the plate, enhancing both its tactile and visual appeal. Historical Context: Delft pottery, originating in the early 1600s in the Netherlands, represents one of the most enduring European ceramic traditions. While decoration evolved with changing fashions, Delft consistently emphasized classic blue and white designs. Dutch potters produced a wide variety of items ranging from functional housewares, such as tiles and plates, to more elaborate decorative pieces. Iconography often included landscapes with windmills, hunting scenes, maritime views, genre scenes of Dutch life, Oriental motifs, and religious subjects, as well as monochrome white wares. This charger exemplifies the combination of technical mastery, stylistic elegance, and functional artistry characteristic of Delft production in the late 17th century.
