About the Item

A rare and collectible earthenware drinking vessel handcrafted by the Beni Ouriaghel tribe of the Moroccan Rif Mountains. This early to mid-20th century piece is a prime example of traditional Berber pottery, known for its refined form and sophisticated geometric decoration. The intricate, hand-painted designs are applied using a traditional tuft of goat hair dipped in "fadis"—a natural black dye derived from the juice of the local mastic tree. The symbolism in the artwork is evocative of the Mediterranean coast, often referencing ships and sailing, reflecting the tribe's geographic heritage. This unique ceramic pitcher features two handles and a characteristic oval opening modeled in the shape of a bird’s beak to facilitate drinking. It serves as both a historical tribal artifact and a stunning piece of sculptural folk art.
