Fine 19th Century Mason s Ashworth s Ironstone Tea Pot Rare Shape, circa 1870

About the Item

This is a really beautiful Teapot or Tea Kettle in a rare shape made by Mason's Ironstone during the mid-19th century, when Mason's was owned by Ashworth Brothers, circa 1870. The tea pot has a very rare shape that we have not seen previously, or in fact seen illustrated. The tea pot is vertically ribbed and has an oval shaped profile, with a high loop "kettle-like" handle. The curved spout is also vertically ribbed. It has a Chinoiserie pattern called The Trophies or octagonal panel of flowers pattern as shown on page 153 in Mason's Ironstone Pattern book published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The pattern depicts a central octagonal bordered panel on either side with stylised flowers, together with other smaller panels enclosing oriental people with much hand painted detail in various bold colours including cobalt blue, green, red and burnt orange and additional gilt highlighting against a mazarine blue ground. The shaped loop handle is painted in a lovely salmon colour with additional gilt detail to both the handle and the spout. The lid is also well painted in similar fine detail with a gilded knob. Overall this piece is very beautifully painted. The base carries various marks as well as a moulded diamond shaped Design Registration Mark. The year and month letters on the diamond are difficult to read but we date this fine piece to circa 1870. It has a moulded "A Bros". mark denoting Ashworth Brothers (Mason's) and a hand painted B 2508 as well as some other painters markings, pattern and size marks. The A Bros. mark is a recorded Mason's / Ashworth's mark and is shown on Page 192 of Godden's Guide to Ironstone, Stone and Granite Wears, published by The Antique Collectors' club. This is a fine and beautiful example of English ironstone pottery, for the Mason's or tea pot collector alike.

Wear consistent with age and use. Overall Very Good antique condition and a beautiful piece. No cracks or restoration. Slight gilding loss in places. One small glaze flake to inside of the lid inner rim.
