About the Item

This is a hard paste porcelain Coffee Can by New Hall, dating to the turn of the 18th century, George 111rd period, circa 1805. The piece is very well potted of hard paste porcelain on a low foot with a plain loop handle having pointed attachments. The cup is beautifully decorated with an underglaze cobalt blue outline which has then been carefully hand painted, over-glaze, in various bold colours with pattern 490, which is a version of the Tobacco Leaf pattern, a pattern first originating on Chinese porcelain. The pattern is finely enhanced with detailed hand gilding. The piece is unmarked to the base as was often the case. This pattern is illustrated on a Newhall porcelain cup in the book; A Compendium of British Cups, by Michael Berthoud, Plate 213, page 36. This is a really fine example of an English Georgian period Coffee Can with a most beautiful pattern.
