About the Item

FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING A pair of French Sèvres style boat-shaped serving dishes with original ormolu mounts, decorated in the Fontainebleau pattern. From our European Ceramics collection, we are pleased to offer this refined pair of French Sèvres style porcelain serving dishes, mounted in original ormolu and decorated in the Château de Fontainebleau pattern. Each dish is of elongated boat-shaped form and finely painted with a frieze of vivid green foliate garlands, interspersed with classically inspired cartouches and stylised birds. The interior features a delicate gilt scrollwork border, centred by a six-pointed star. The dishes rest on four scrolling legs adorned with garlands of fruiting vine, supported by finely cast gilt bronze mounts. The porcelain bears multiple marks: the interlaced L’s for Louis Philippe’s Sèvres period, the Château de Fontainebleau mark, incised marks referencing the original Sèvres blank, additional painted initials including WB, and dating to 1839 and 1840 respectively. The ormolu bases are stamped CHER. These pieces are after the original designs commissioned by King Louis-Philippe between 1836 and 1847, produced by the Sèvres Manufactory under designer Jean-Charles François Leloy and decorator Antoine-Louis Bouvrain. This pair was created circa 1880, during a resurgence of interest in Sèvres reproductions among collectors and patrons. A decorative and historically inspired pair of French serving dishes combining detailed porcelain work with original 19th century ormolu mounts. CHÂTEAU DE FONTAINEBLEAU Also known as the Palace of Fontainebleau is located southeast of Paris and is one of the largest French royal châteaux. The medieval castle served as a residence for the French monarchs from Louis VII to Napoleon III. Francis I and Napoleon were the monarchs who had the most influence on the palace as it stands today. In 1927 it became a national museum in and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 for its unique architecture and historical importance. FONTAINEBLEAU AND SEVRES Commissioned by King Louis-Philippe for the Château de Fontainebleau, this service formed part of a broader dining commission across his official residences. The first pieces were delivered in 1839, with additions continuing through to 1847. The pair of dishes offered here are direct copies and follow the more intricate of the two border designs used in the service. The decoration features arabesques of foliage with inset reserves containing royal emblems and cipher motifs, a visual reference to Fontainebleau’s Renaissance character and long-standing association with the French monarchy. The naturalistic borders evoke the surrounding forest and allude to the château’s historical role as a royal hunting retreat. SEVRES (MANUFACTURE NATIONALE DE SÈVRES) Sèvres porcelain, founded in 1740 as the Vincennes manufactory and relocated to Sèvres in 1756, became France’s royal porcelain factory under Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour. Renowned for its innovation, rich colours, and refined decoration, Sèvres produced both soft- and hard-paste porcelain, supplying Europe’s elite and serving as a key diplomatic gift of the French crown. Today, Sèvres remains one of Europe’s most celebrated porcelain names.
