About the Item
French Romance is a series of handcrafted ceramic cups created in 2023 by Manita Makes. Each piece is made by hand and individually hand painted, resulting in unique objects that combine functional use with narrative and artistic expression.
Behind the Manita Makes project is artist Saro Delgado, born and raised in Mexico City, where she studied Industrial Design and discovered ceramics as her primary artistic language. In the French Romance collection, Delgado explores themes of European fantasy, migration, failure, and the loss of innocence. The cups reinterpret antique French and English tableware through a deliberately childlike and expressive lens.
The recurring characters Miss Romance and Rat inhabit these pieces, embodying personal and collective migratory experiences. Through humor and vulnerability, the work reflects on idealization and disillusionment, particularly in relation to European romanticism. As the artist states, “Miss Romance is me, it’s you, it’s all of us.” The cups stand as poetic objects that merge storytelling, craft, and emotional resonance within contemporary ceramic practice.
