About the Item

This is a good black basalt Teapot and cover lid, which we attribute to a Staffordshire Potteries, English maker, circa 1825. The teapot is well potted with a cylindrical body having an everted top rim, straight tapering spout with raised ring and moulded loop handle. The lid is circular with a flat knob. The Teapot has engine turned decoration around the main body and shoulder with a moulded leaf pattern to the outer handle. The lid has similar engine turned decoration radially from the centre. The shape is characteristic of the English Regency, late Georgian period. We cannot find any makers marks on this piece which was often the case. Overall a distinctive piece of black basalt. Provenance: The MET museum of 5th Ave, New York has a very similar black basalt teapot , see Reference: Credit Line: Bequest of Mrs. Maria P. James, 1911 Accession Number: 11.60.54a, b.

A scarce black Basalt engine-turned teapot, attributed to William Adams I (1746-1805) Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 1790. The basket like pattern on the body and lid was achieved by the use of an engine-turning lathe, first introduced to the Staffordshire pottery industry by Josiah Wedgwood in 1763.
