About the Item
Depiction of Russian prima ballerina Anna Pavlova as the dying swan in an expressive dance solo (Pas seul) by choreographer Michel Fokine, which was conceived exclusively for the dancer, to the music of the cello solo Le
Cygne from Le carnaval des animaux (1886) by Camille Saint-Saëns, which lasts a good three minutes. The choreography premiered on 22 December 1905 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg during a charity event.
The figure of the dying swan is based on Pyotr Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake: Odile/Odette, a princess enchanted as a swan, sacrifices herself for her prince Siegfried. The swan costumes in the original performances were particularly similar, but there is no death solo in Swan Lake. Another source often cited is Alfred Tennyson's poem The Dying Swan (1830).
The final pose of the solo on the left knee is particularly famous, with the arms folded like wings over the outstretched right leg and the head nestled between them, as is also expressed in this design.
A photograph by Frans van Riel served as the model.
In keeping with the dancer's original costume, the skirt is adorned with sewn-on wings and the head is covered by a feather crown that frames the face.
Based on a black oval flat base.
Designed by Stephan DAKON (1904 - 1992), was one of the most important designers who worked for the Goldscheider manufactory from 1924 until the mid-fifties.
Model 7426 was created and made circa 1935/1936.
