About the Item
One of the most popular and elegant models produced by Goldscheider Manufaktur Vienna:
Depiction of the dancer Niddy Impekoven (1904-2002) performing her dance ‘The Captured Bird’ in the early twenties of the 20th century:
A dancer balancing on tiptoe, arms raised in front of and behind her, taking a step to the right. She is wearing a short, translucent red dance dress with batwing sleeves patterned in red, blue, black and yellow, reminiscent of
butterfly wings, on her head a red, tight-fitting headdress that almost completely covers her hair.
On a black, gently stepped oval base, artist's signature ‘Laurenzl’ on the back of the vase placed to the side of the figure and serving as a support.
Designed by Josef LORENZL (1892 - 1950), was an Austrian sculptor and ceramic modeler. His bronze statuettes often show graceful dancers with long legs and closed eyes. Lorenzl designed numerous ceramics for Friedrich Goldscheider and Keramos and was one of the most popular artists of Art Deco.

Goldscheider Vienna Art Déco Figure, Spanish Dancer, by Josef Lorenzl circa 1930
By Josef Lorenzl, Goldscheider Manufactory of Vienna
Located in Vienna, AT
Depiction of a dancer in Spanish costume: she wears a mantilla, a veil cloth that covers the head and neck down to the shoulders. Often, as here, a high comb is also tucked underneath, the peineta. The cloth is still worn today for festive costumes and is mostly made in lace technique. In addition, the dancer wears an elaborately decorated with floral patterns asymmetrical ruffled skirt.
On oval, black-beige marbled base in rare execution.
This figure also exists as a group 'Spanish Dance' with dance partner,
model number 7557, a more frequent version.
