About the Item
Vintage ceramic ewer-shaped bud vase was made by Gonder Pottery in Zanesville, Ohio. The vase has highly sculptural, characteristic mid-century modern shape with graphic handle that is accentuated by complex blue glaze with light drip glaze accent. The interior of the vase is glazed in pink color.
The vase is signed with raised Gonder USA script mark, the second oldest Gonder mark. It is done in modified cursive script; the script mark emphasizes the long tail of the letter G and also adds a similar tail to the letter d.
Gonder Pottery operated from 1941 to 1957; from 1946 to 1954, Gonder also operated the Elgee Pottery, which made ceramic lamp bases. Gonder made high-grade pottery decorated with flambe, drip, gold crackle, and Chinese crackle glazes.
We are offering a similar Gonder vase in the same shape, but in chartreuse color, in a separate listing.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.

Crystalline Glaze Bud Vase Blue
Yellow, American Art Studio Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
The striking vintage studio pottery ceramic vase is decorated with crystalline glaze in contrasting blue and mustard yellow colors. The vase was hand thrown on a wheel; blue color crystals on ombre colored base, shifting from ligher shade of yellow on top to deep mustard yellow on the bottom, were grown in a kiln during a very long, controlled firing. Each crystalline piece is unique due to the nature of the glaze. The vase was allowed to develop an abundance of distinct, graphic crystals, creating a free-flowing abstract pattern and adding rich texture to the minimally shaped piece.
The vase was made by Wizards of Clay, studio pottery in Finger Lakes region of Upstate NY. Since 1962 the family-run studio creates traditional pottery in variety of glazes. The vase is clearly signed on the bottom.
