Gustavo Perez Studio Ceramic Vase "Pieza-Taller Gustavo Perez." Gustavo Perez, b.1950, Mexico; Active in Zoncuantla in the state of Veracruz, Mexico and France with partner Brigitte Pénicaud at Les Places. Exhibits widely throughout Mexico, Europe, the United States, Canada, Cuba, Japan, Korea, and Europe. An active member of the board of the International Academy of Ceramics The esteemed Gallery of Erskine, Hall Coe currently represent Perez in the Mayfair district of London along with such ceramic luminaries as Coper, Rie, Duckworth, and Casanovas. This example on offer here embodies Perez's preoccupation with the cylinder vessel and his signature incisions into clay-what Garth Clark, author of the influential American Ceramics and highly influential dealer/collector refers to as Perez's "gentle cuts." As Perez himself describes, "This discovery produced without a doubt the international recognition for my work. And I must say that I felt a profound pleasure in realizing that such a simple effect (because it is indeed a very easy technical resource) had never been used in the thousands of years of ceramics history, or at least, never had been really developed." Perez has been compared with other "architectural ceramicists." His thoughtful and precise surface work on cylindrical forms certainly does call to mind the similarly focused wide cylinders of constructivist minded potters like Bodil Manz-this work demonstrates the parallel; but Perez's pots are his own. There is no mistaking his distinctive incisions and their related volumes of interrupted and gently displaced clay combined with a penchant for warm earth tones. His signature patterns of sliced forms generate rhythmic patterns around an otherwise austere form. There is, as well his singular willingness to carefully violate the sanctity of the cylinder with sensual undulations paired with his sliced breaks-a more prevalent feature in recent work. For American collectors, particularly here in California, Perez's precise forms, geometric patterns and warm glazes call to mind the sensual precision of California potters Harrison MacIntosh and Rupert Deese.
