About the Item

This statement piece is a one-of-a-kind creation, hand-built from porcelain slabs in Brooklyn, then fired in a traditional Japanese-style wood-burning Noborigama kiln in Cold Spring, NY. The firing process requires round the clock stoking over several days, plus several days just to cool, but the result is the serendipity of ash, minerals, and glaze chemicals melting and colliding at temperatures over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. The bowl at the top is hollow, formed from two slabs, as is the cylindrical base, which is open at the bottom. The luster glaze melted and pooled into green and purple glass in the basin of the bowl, while gravity created purple ash streaks and spots all around the exterior. 24 karat gold leaf was applied after firing for a luxe decorative effect.
