About the Item

IItalian Maiolica “La Bella” Istoriato Lustered Red Water Jug 19th Century A finely decorated Italian maiolica water jug, richly painted in the “La Bella” style and enhanced with red luster glaze. The jug features a classic istoriato (narrative or figural) decoration inspired by the Renaissance tradition of Urbino and Deruta pottery, depicting an elegantly dressed female figure — La Bella — surrounded by ornamental motifs. The piece exemplifies the 19th-century revival of Renaissance maiolica, when Italian workshops sought to reproduce the brilliance and charm of 16th-century ceramics. The warm, metallic red luster and vividly painted surface reveal the enduring fascination with historical decorative techniques. Maiolica technique: The pottery body, once fired, is coated with an opaque white tin glaze. Onto this surface, colorful oxides are hand-painted to create the design. A second firing fuses the pigments with the glaze, producing a glossy, glass-like finish with exceptional vibrancy. The additional luster firing imparts a metallic sheen to selected areas, characteristic of Deruta and Gubbio traditions. Origin: Italy Date: 19th Century Medium: Tin-glazed and lustered earthenware (maiolica) Decoration: “La Bella” figure with istoriato and red luster highlights Technique: Painted tin glaze over earthenware, with additional luster
