About the Item

Ceramic vase in the form of a woman by the noted French ceramicist Jacques Pouchain. Signed both JP and Atelier Dieulefit. Jacques Pouchain (1927-2015) No chips or restorations, the unglazed, expressively executed. Born in 1925 Jacques Pouchain left Paris and set up a studio in Dieulefit in the Drome region of Southern France in the 1950's. He produced utilitarian work as well as decorative items, particularly animals. He developed into larger abstract pieces and later moved towards painting, on which he now works predominantly. His work has been exhibited in the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris. Pouchain lived in Dieulefit (in French it means "God created it"), a town inhabited by many other artists and writers. Jacques Pouchain, originally trained as an architect in Paris, transitioned to painting in 1951 before settling in Dieulefit, Drôme. At the Coursange faience workshop in Poet-Laval, he honed his ceramic skills, modernizing designs with his painting talent. In 1958, he opened his own ceramic studio in Dieulefit, producing utilitarian pieces adorned with figurative motifs and later transitioning to stylized, abstract works. Influenced by Nicolas de Staël, his paintings evolved towards abstraction while his ceramics celebrated themes of femininity and fertility, reflecting a joyful and architecturally inspired oeuvre. No chips or restorations.
