About the Item

Large vase model no. 308 by Jean de Lespinasse, Nice, France, circa 1950. Rotating scarified decor on satin black enamel, interior is a shiny bright red. In very good condition, small chip on the lower rim not visible when displayed. "Jean de Lespinasse (1896-1979) French ceramist JdL ceramics workshop in Nice (1955-1979). JdL is the acronym for Jean de Lespinasse, from the Nice ceramics workshop. The workshop began operating in 1955 and ceased production upon Jean's death in 1979. For almost 25 years, Jean de Lespinasse worked to create high-quality ceramic art. Located in the Saint-Maurice district of Nice, the workshop, created under the name SOCFRA by Jean de Lespinasse (1896-1979) and his wife, Simone Dreyfus (1909-1989), operated from the mid-1950s until the late 1970s. The workshop employed around ten people (plaster mold making, casting, tinkering, biscuit firing, decoration, glazing, firing, shipping, administration). The pieces produced were signed JdL and accompanied by a number, which referred to the catalogs that Jean de Lespinasse, his son-in-law Jean Saguès (1933-1991), and then representatives used when they went on tour after each trade show (Foire de Lyon, Salon des Ateliers d'Art in Paris) to present new models and designs. These ceramics were sold in souvenir and decoration shops in France and abroad, as well as in stores rented by the company in Sainte-Maxime, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and Vallauris. "
