About Jean Picart Le Doux (1902–1982)
Jean Picart Le Doux was one of the most influential figures in the revival of 20th-century French tapestry and ceramics. Born in Paris in 1902, he was the son of painter Charles Picart Le Doux. After early work in publishing and graphic arts, he transitioned to fine art and design, exhibiting his first works in 1935 at Galerie Billiet-Vorms.
A pivotal meeting with Jean Lurçat in 1940 redirected his focus toward tapestry and decorative arts. By the mid-1940s, Picart Le Doux had established himself as a leading designer for the modern tapestry movement, contributing to major exhibitions such as the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris and collaborating with decorators like Leleu.
Throughout his career, he held prominent roles in the Association of Tapestry Painters, the Salon d’Automne, and the Société des Artistes Décorateurs. His monumental works were commissioned by institutions such as the Chambre de Commerce of Paris, the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, and the Mobilier National. His tapestries can be found in the collections of the Musée National d’Art Moderne, the Manufacture des Gobelins, and international museums.
Renowned as both an artist and teacher, Jean Picart Le Doux remains a central figure in French modern decorative art, celebrated for his distinctive synthesis of geometric abstraction and lyrical form.
