About the Item
Keith Murray Vase in 'matt straw' glaze, shape 4316 hand-thrown and turned, made at Josiah Wedgwood
Sons, Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent circa 1935.
A vase with architectural clean lines and geometric simplicity. The soft pale straw hue allows light to graze the ridges and subtle curves without the distraction of high shine.
Originally trained as an architect, Keith Murray designed Wedgwood’s factory building at Barlaston, which opened in 1940, but his initial involvement with Wedgwood was as a ceramics designer. Between 1932 and 1939 Murray created more than 1,200 designs for Wedgwood, including shapes and hand-painted border patterns, characterised by their simple, clean forms and effective use of the company’s new matte glazes. Murray reimagined Wedgwood’s traditions with a modern aesthetic.
