About the Item

Rare and unusual square ceramic tray, charger, or plaque features striking geometric decor in Art Deco style. The reserved mocha brown and warm burnt cinnamon colors of the pattern are juxtaposed with the off-white background; the colorway is rather unique to the typical Longwy color palette. The use of craquelure, cracked, or crazed, glaze, that acquires additional visual effect during firing, as well as ceramic cloisonne technique, with prominent lines dividing the pattern, adds extra dimension and texture to the piece. The tray is marked with the round "Primavera Longwy France" stamp mark that was in use from 1920 to 1936; it stands on short round feet when used as tray or charger, but can be displayed as a mounted plaque or wall art. It is in good antique or vintage condition with light signs of use on the enamels' surface that commensurate with the age, do not detract from the artistic quality of the piece, and can be observed upon the close inspection. Sculptural, decorative piece with elegant form, tactile, bold qualities, and exceptional craftsmanship will make a great gift to a collector or design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Art Deco, Arts and Crafts, Organic Modern, Mid Century Moden, Collected, or Contemporary. Primavera Atelier was created in 1912 by René Guilleré, founder the of the Society of Decorative Artists, and Pierre Laguionie, the manager of Le Printemps, the Parisian department store, as the store’s design firm. In 1920s Primavera achieving widespread recognition for its high end Art Deco designs, that were showcased in the most prominent Decorative Arts Salons. During the 1920s and 1930s, Primavera collaborated with leading artists of the period, including René Buthaud, and partnered with esteemed ceramic houses, such as Longwy, to create avant-garde designs tailored for the modern collector.
