About the Item
Marcello Fantoni glazed ceramic rectangular bowl with horses 15 ½” long, 10 ½” wide, and stands 3 ½” tall to the rim. Signed underside.
This historical bowl is a modified rectangle with sloping walls that frame a voluminous interior decorated with a raised leaping horse in purple, yellow and brown tones set against a glassy deep blue background. The walls of the piece (inside and out) are decorated with a thick creamy craquelure glaze. The interior walls are further adorned with an assortment of raised colorful squiggly flourishes. Each of the outside walls features a well-placed “S” set against a sea of veiny sky blue drip.

Marcello Fantoni
Marcello Fantoni was a Florentine artist who specialized in ceramics. He studied at the Art Institute in Florence, where Libero Andreotti and Bruno Innocenti were his sculpting professors and Gianni Vagnetti was his figurative art professor. Fantoni began to work as a ceramist in 1934, opening his factory in 1936. After the Second World War, he became very successful, and his works are held in some of the world's most important museums (from the USA to Japan).
