About the Item
This is a large ironstone Jug or Pitcher in the Blue Hawthorne and Fence
Bowl pattern, made by Mason's Ironstone of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, during the first half of the 19th century, circa 1825-1835.
This large jug has a rare shape, with a baluster body over a low foot, tapering to the shoulder with a short neck which opens up to a well formed pouring spout. The jug has a classical loop handle, with two people heads molded into the upper handle below the thumb rest.
The main section of the pitcher is hand decorated with two different inset, chinoiserie influenced patterns on opposite sides surrounded by a mazarine blue with gold scrolls. The cartouche hold the Blue Hawthorne pattern with the other having the Fence and Bowl pattern, with other Imari style patterns in other positions on the body, all vividly hand painted with typical bold enamels of different colors. This Jug has very good hand gilded detail and an inner border decoration around the top rim. The patterns are all illustrated in the book "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns", published by The Mason's Collectors' Club with the Blue Hawthorn pattern on page 132.
There is a Mason's printed round crown mark to the base, dating this piece to circa 1830.
Overall a rare shape, very decorative, early large Mason's Ironstone vase, nearly 200 years old.
