Matched Pair of English Pearlware Dolphin Cream Jugs Circa 1800, each modelled with green enameled fish scales to the sides, the lip modelled as the dolphin's open mouth and painted with ochre enamel, the handle modelled as the dolphin's tail. Neither cream jug is marked, but on one example, there is a tear-shaped oval scratched to base interior, possibly from kiln furniture as there is a similar flaw to glaze opposite. circa 1800. Measures: 4 3/4" H. x 6 1/4" W. x 2 1/4. On the example with the oval to the base, the condition is as follows: lower lip chipped, professionally refilled and in-painted, now indistinguishable from the rest. Firing crack to body interior, from blow hole near handle. Shallow and less than 1/8" chip to foot rim. On the other example, there is a firing crack along the seam where the jug meets the base, visible in photos here; there are a few light glaze flakes to the base, also visible by photo inspection. No other concomitant damage is visible under black light. Minor crazing to glaze, as is typical of pearlware. These are small cosmetic problems, the appearance is excellent. The green is slightly-lighter in shade on the second of the two examples described. Bonham's sold another of identical appearance, from the respective estates of Alastair Sampson and Jonathan Horne, 4/28/2010, lot 628 (660 UK Pounds). The form is unusual, and to find a pair together is rare. The depiction of the dolphin is conflated between antique prints of dolphin fish and lamprey eels. With the eyeballs facing up toward the sky, there is an element of humor innate to the cream jugs. Provenance: From the estate of George Forman, Pennsylvania.
