A charming oval platter by Robert Picault, one of the defining ceramists of Vallauris during the mid-20th century. Known for his bold geometric motifs and folkloric decoration, Picault also produced more painterly works that highlight his sensitivity to form and surface.
This piece is decorated with a stylized floral composition: three hand-painted blossoms in earthy brown tones rise from a cluster of turquoise stems and leaves, set against a soft white ground. The border is outlined in turquoise glaze, framing the design with a vibrant Mediterranean touch.
Created during the 1950s, when Picault was at the height of his career, the platter exemplifies his ability to merge utilitarian pottery with expressive decoration. Both functional and decorative, it embodies the postwar Vallauris ethos of artistry in everyday objects. A refined addition to any collection of French mid-century ceramics.

Robert Picault
Robert Picault was born in Paris. After studying ceramics at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he moved to Vallauris at the end of World War Two. Here, with Roger Capron, he founded the Atelier Callis in 1946. Two years later, he set up his own pottery in the Chemin du Fournas in the village. He was a friend, colleague and next-door-neighbour to Pablo Picasso, and the two learnt from each other aspects of the other's specialities. Picault was also an accomplished cinematographer and photographer, and made a series of four short films with Picasso and leading show-business personalities of the 1950s. He used copper oxide and iron oxide in his glazes, and the bulk of his work is characterized by green and brown geometric motifs consisting of noughts and crosses, bands and waves.

Robert Picault has contributed to the revival of culinary ceramics by updating traditional local forms decorated with lines and geometric designs.
His identity style has been a great success and continues to decorate the table today. His personal pieces are sought after by art collectors.
A former student of the School of Applied Arts in Paris, Robert Picault arrived in Vallauris in 1946. He created with his school friends Roger Capron (1922-2006) and Jean Derval (1925-2010), the Callis workshop.
In this village of a hundred potters, they met the neighboring ceramists André Baud, the 4 potters and among others the Madoura workshop, where he frequented the famous painter Picasso from 1949 to 1955. He also became friends with Jean Cocteau, Fernand Léger, Louis Aragon...
