About the Item

A very good pair of antique 17th century Spanish blue white pottery albarelli or apothecary jars, circa 1680. From the 15th century onward cylindrical drug jars like this were used throughout Europe Islamic countries in North Africa the Near East, they were used for medicines and herbal remedies. This late 1600s pair of Spanish albarelli are of cylindrical waisted form and having a wide slightly flared mouth, each jar with a raised circular foot. Both jars are decorated with a blue scrolling floral design and each jar having a hand-painted with the Latin name of the contents. There are the usual expected abrasions to the glaze and other little idiosyncrasies, but the albarelli are in otherwise solid condition, a fine pair of 350 year old antique apothecary jars.
