About the Item
A charming pair of Italian majolica in the Renaissance style vases. Includes a vibrant polychrome tin-glazed earthenware finish with decorative motifs popular of this style and region. Includes painted depictions of the Lion of St. Mark the Evangelist in yellow on one vase, with the other lion being in violet blue and yellow. The lions represent courage, strength, and the power of Christ's resurrection. Floral flourishes of teal and light mossy greens and accents of yellow and orange sit around other portions of the vases. Small heads on the bottom of the handles depict lions faces. This pair was created in Italy circa the 20th Century.
Markings on the bottom of both include “Da Lena Ravello Del Amano.” This identifies the manufacturer as Ceramiche Artistiche Da Lena, a known pottery producer located in Ravello, a town on Italy's Amalfi Coast famous for its ceramics.
In good condition. Some gentle wear consistent with age and use. One of the top handles has been refastened to the vase. A bottom section of one of the vases includes some visible wear that has been repaired. A visible dark color is on the bottom of one obscuring the marking slightly, which may be due the process of firing the piece. The crackle texture on the bottom is a natural part of the finish.
These vases would make for an excellent decorative element in any garden or as indoor planters or urns to feature in a living room space, kitchen or solarium in any home.
