A pair of lidded ceramic pots by Robert Picault, one of the most celebrated ceramists of Vallauris during the postwar period. Working alongside Picasso, Picault developed a distinctive style that blended functional utility with bold decorative flair, characterized by his signature palette of green, brown, and white glazes.
Each pot in this pair features twin handles and a domed lid with knob finial. The surfaces are richly decorated with geometric patterns—spirals, diamonds, and cross-hatch motifs—executed with rhythmic precision. The alternating bands of earthy brown and vibrant green glazes give the pieces both warmth and vibrancy, hallmarks of Picault’s artistry.
Produced in the 1950s, these pots exemplify the joyful, handcrafted spirit that defined the Vallauris ceramic movement. Today, Picault’s works are highly collectible for their craftsmanship, authenticity, and ability to bring mid-century French charm into both practical use and decorative display.

Robert Picault
Robert Picault was born in Paris. After studying ceramics at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he moved to Vallauris at the end of World War Two. Here, with Roger Capron, he founded the Atelier Callis in 1946. Two years later, he set up his own pottery in the Chemin du Fournas in the village. He was a friend, colleague and next-door-neighbour to Pablo Picasso, and the two learnt from each other aspects of the other's specialities. Picault was also an accomplished cinematographer and photographer, and made a series of four short films with Picasso and leading show-business personalities of the 1950s. He used copper oxide and iron oxide in his glazes, and the bulk of his work is characterized by green and brown geometric motifs consisting of noughts and crosses, bands and waves.

French ceramist in Vallauris
Robert Picault has contributed to the revival of culinary ceramics by updating traditional local forms decorated with lines and geometric designs.
His identity style has been a great success and continues to decorate the table today. His personal pieces are sought after by art collectors.
A former student of the School of Applied Arts in Paris, Robert Picault arrived in Vallauris in 1946. He created with his school friends Roger Capron (1922-2006) and Jean Derval (1925-2010), the Callis workshop.
In this village of a hundred potters, they met the neighboring ceramists André Baud, the 4 potters and among others the Madoura workshop, where he frequented the famous painter Picasso from 1949 to 1955. He also became friends with Jean Cocteau, Fernand Léger, Louis Aragon and Elsa Triolet.
