Manifattura Cantagalli was a ceramic manufacturer in Florence, active between the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Ulisse Cantagalli started producing artistic ceramics, alongside his kiln on Via Senese in Florence, which produced raw building materials.
In his artistic production, intended for the emerging middle class, he was inspired by Renaissance models from Faenza, Urbino, Cafaggiolo, Gubbio, Pesaro, and Casteldurante, as well as 17th-century majolica from Savona and İznik, often producing exact copies, while at other times devoting himself to original creations.
It enjoyed considerable success, especially in the first half of the 20th century, when the factory established itself as one of the most important in the region, halfway between the classicism of Richard Ginori and the modernist creations of Manifattura Chini.
This period also saw important commissions for the decoration of public buildings, such as the Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e Pescia building in Pistoia and the Palazzo delle Poste in Florence, as well as private buildings, such as Villa Stibbert.
Ulysse Cantagalli produced highly decorative Italian ceramics in the Renaissance style.
He devoted his artistic energy to the understanding of the techniques and the designs of the old masters and important ceramic centers.
His ability to master the ruby and golden luster techniques of Mastro Giorgio Andreoli brought the factory to fame, particularly in Britain. Cantagalli died in 1901 and the Cantagalli factory closed in 1985.
