About the Item

For Manufacture nationale de Sèvres A flared porcelain bowl on a tall foot, decorated with a floral frieze inside, blue-grey enamels on a white enameled ground. Enamelled factory signatures and artist's monogram. Circa 1970 Height: 12 cm Fance Franck was born in Alabama and grew up in Texas before moving to France to pursue higher education in French literature, philosophy, and aesthetics at the Sorbonne. She remained in Paris, where she lived and worked until her death in 2008. She worked with porcelain, exploring the exceptional and delicate qualities of this material. Fance Franck traveled extensively, working, lecturing, and exhibiting in the United States, France, China, Japan, England, Switzerland, and the former Soviet Union. In addition to numerous awards for her work with porcelain and red enamels, works by France Franck are included in the collections of the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. United by their inspiration and practice of Far Eastern ceramic techniques, Francine Del Pierre and Fance Franck occupy a unique place in the landscape of French ceramic art of the 1950s and 60s. The career of Francine Del Pierre, a legendary ceramicist, lasted barely twenty years, cut short by her death in 1968. In 1949, she founded the Tryptique workshop in Vallauris with Albert Diato and Gilbert Portanier. In 1954, her meeting in London with Bernard Leach, author of *The Potter's Book*, a bible for a generation of ceramicists, marked the beginning of a body of work characterized by absolute rigor, developed in subtly nuanced glazed colors based on highly precise drawings. In 1957, Fance Franck joined Francine Del Pierre's workshop, where she, too, pursued research into modeling, the development of fundamental forms, and their movement in space. Three years later, the two ceramists founded the workshop on rue Bonaparte, a place of work where collectors, directors of international museums and great master potters such as Leach, Hamada or Cardew met.
