About the Item

Antique Italian-Style Maiolica Portrait Charger, Dated 1886 A striking maiolica portrait charger, richly decorated in cobalt blue and ochre, depicting a classical female profile within a laurel wreath border, surrounded by scrolling foliate ornament. The inscription cartouche adds further Renaissance-inspired charm, echoing the istoriato tradition of Urbino and Deruta ceramics. To the reverse is an inscription recording “Annie Eliza Spong – Balham – Oct 7th 1886”, situating the piece firmly in the late 19th century. This date reflects the Victorian revival of Renaissance maiolica, when artists and studios across Europe sought to emulate the splendour of Italian Renaissance ceramics for a cultured clientele. The charger sits on a later clear stand for display. The glaze is vibrant, the portrait beautifully stylised, and the hand-painted decoration retains excellent colour and character. A decorative piece of historic interest, with both aesthetic and social resonance. Condition Report Good, with minor expected surface wear to the glaze consistent with age. Measurement Height: 38 cm / 15 inches Width: 38 cm / 15 inches Depth: 2 cm / 0.8 inches Weight: 1.3 k.g / 2.9 lbs
