About the Item

Rare Axel Salto stoneware vase model 21.329 manufactured and stamped at Royal Copenhagen, Denmark in 1958. The vase is modelled in the budding style and glazed in the expressive Solfatara glazing that was only used for a short period of time at the Royal Copenhagen workshop from 1936-1958. The glazing was one of Saltos most preferred as he found it suited his sculptural vases and bowls perfectly. Axel Salto studied as a visual artist at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1909 to 1914. He founded the influential art journal Klingen in 1917, and as part of the progressive art collective De Fire he flourished as a painter in the 1910s and early 1920s. Following this, he devoted himself particularly to ceramics, cultivating a distinctive organic style that would become his hallmark. As a ceramic artist, Salto was inspired by the structures, movements and patterns of nature, as is clearly evident in his works, where bold, brightly coloured glazes and expressive surfaces were unlike anything else seen at the time. Stoneware was his preferred material, and he enjoyed experimenting in collaboration with potters and glaze specialists. From the mid-1930s, Salto worked mainly at Den kgl. Porcelainsfabrik. Concurrently with this, he continued to work with painting, drawing, printmaking and design. Today, Salto is regarded as one of the most significant Danish artists in ceramic art, being prominently featured among those who have put Danish ceramics on the world map.
