About the Item

19th Century Meissen Porcelain Figurines – Set of the Four Seasons A finely modelled set of four Meissen porcelain figures representing the Four Seasons, produced in the 19th century and based on mid-18th century designs by Friedrich Elias Meyer, one of Meissen’s principal sculptors. Each figure is hand-painted and stands on a scroll-moulded base with gilt detailing, capturing the classical iconography of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Spring is depicted as a maiden holding a garland of flowers; Summer carries a wheatsheaf and sickle; Autumn takes the form of a youthful Bacchic figure with a goblet and grapes; Winter is represented by a bearded man in a fur-lined robe, warming himself beside a flaming urn. The set exhibits the fine craftsmanship, painterly precision, and sculptural elegance typical of Meissen’s 19th-century production. Each figure bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark, with impressed model numbers and decorator’s marks to the base. Condition: Good decorative condition overall. Some restoration and minor losses as follows: Spring with restoration to the flower garland and one arm; Summer with restoration to the left-hand thumb and a small loss to the top of the wheatsheaf; Autumn with restoration to the right foot and minor chips to the laurel wreath; Winter in very good condition with a small rub to the paint on one finger. All figures structurally sound with no major breaks. Colours and gilding remain strong and well preserved. A well-preserved and increasingly rare complete set of the Four Seasons, showcasing the enduring appeal of Meissen’s allegorical porcelain work.

A decorative early-Victorian garniture of three English porcelain vases, unmarked and probably by Samuel Alcock & Co., c.1845–55. The modelling (flared, scalloped rims; quatrefoil feet with gilt sprigging; pierced scroll handles) and the palette of the painted oval landscape reserves are consistent with Alcock’s work of the period. The elaborate applied blossoms and leaves are in the Coalbrookdale...
