About the Item

Set Three Royal Copenhagen Allegorical Bisque Plaques Danish 19th Century Denmark, Late 19th Century Plaques: Height/diameter 26.5cm Frames: Height/diameter 31.5cm This distinguished group of three Royal Copenhagen bisque porcelain plaques showcases the artistry and technical finesse for which the Danish manufactory became celebrated during the late 19th century. Modelled in raised relief, the plaques present serene allegorical scenes inspired by neoclassical aesthetics, their details heightened by the smooth, unglazed bisque surface that lends the compositions a sculptural purity. The three medallions depict idealised moments of rural and domestic life: youthful figures gathering grain, a peaceful interior with an elder and attendant, and a pastoral family greeting a returning figure carrying game and fruit. These themes echo traditional allegories of the seasons, labour, and familial harmony, rendered with sensitivity and clarity. The modelling captures graceful drapery, expressive gestures, and subtle background details, all harmonised into balanced circular compositions. Framed in matching ebonised wood surrounds, the plaques gain further presence and contrast, highlighting their classical lines while ensuring they remain unified as a decorative set. Their restrained palette and refined relief work make them suitable for a wide range of interiors, from neoclassical to modern minimalist spaces where sculptural accents are prized. Each plaque is marked with the blue wave insignia and impressed “Eneret” and “V.P.”, confirming their production under the factory’s authorised designs. These plaques represent an excellent example of Royal Copenhagen’s bisque production, demonstrating both aesthetic refinement and cultural interest. Displayed together, they create a compelling narrative suite of allegorical imagery and reflect the artistic sophistication of late 19th-century Danish porcelain design.
