About the Item
Spanish Arista Tile Fragment, Toledo, mid-16th Century (c. 1550–1575)
This tin-glazed earthenware tile fragment originates from Toledo, Spain, dated to circa 1550–1575. The ceramic employs the arista (cuenca) technique—molded and impressed in soft clay to create raised ridges (aristas) that separate differently colored glazes during firing—an efficient method that supplanted the more time-intensive cuerda seca process.
The fragment displays a candlestick-like motif with leaf-shaped extensions in the upper field; adjacent tile fragments would align to form complete candlestick motifs at the vertical joins. Below, a continuous vegetal/leaf motif extends across the lower section. These design choices align with the Hispano-Moresque tradition as practiced in Toledo in the Renaissance period.
Glaze coloration reflects regional Toledo characteristics—likely including manganese, green, and cobalt tones typical of local workshops of this era. On the reverse, the tile shows trimmed edges—a customary adaptation to improve mortar adhesion during historic installations.
Condition remains very good for a 450-year-old object, with minor glaze losses consistent with age.
Reglued chip in the lower middle and larger chip on the lower right.
