Portrayal of the dancer Lucie Kieselhausen in an exotic costume consisting of a jacket and knee-length skirt with star decoration in brown, blue and yellow, sleeves and skirt part with tiered flounces with a wavy hem, the waisted jacket on the side and on the back with three peaks similar to a bellflower, jagged headgear with long colored feathers curved upwards, floral decorative element on the side of the posing figure at her feet.
The figure is based on a black, round base with the artist's signature 'Kostial' on the top next to the figure.
The dancer and actress Lucy Kieselhausen (1897 - 1926) was a student of Grete Wiesenthal and was a successful German dancer at the beginning of the 20th century. Lucy Kieselhausen appeared in three silent films: 'Thousand and one Woman' (18), 'The Seventh Great Power' and 'Earth Spirit'. In addition to her dancing activities, Lucy Kieselhausen also wrote the dance drama 'Salambo', which was set to music by Heinz Tiessen. Depiction of a dancer in Spanish costume: she wears a mantilla, a veil cloth that covers the head and neck down to the shoulders. Often, as here, a high comb is also tucked underneath, the peineta. This is a rare and early stone China (Ironstone) mug which dates to the George 111 period, circa 1815 made by the Davenport factory of Longport, Staffordshire Potteries, England.
The mug is straight sided similar to a coffee can and has a loop handle with an upper thumb rest.
The pattern is number "659", which is one of Davenport's very few chinoiserie patterns.
The bold pattern features striking polychrome enamels of rocks and different flowers all in the Chinoiserie style, hand painted over-glaze in different colours over an under-glaze blue printed outline. The pattern is embellished with good hand gilding. There is also a deep border pattern to the inside rim which replicates the outer mug pattern with sprigs of hand painted flowers.
The mark on the base of the mug is Godden's 1183, a blue printed DAVENPORT STONE CHINA...

The rounded bowl stands raised on four half ball shaped feet with a basket weave styled design. The rounded bowl is applied with decorative panels in low relief with leaf and stem handles to either side and with birds, their wings out spread, perched on a scorlling vine. The bowl has a raised rim with gothic style pierced panels and is richly hand painted in tones of brown, green, red, yellow, white and black. This is a very rare, ironstone Two Handled, Ice Pail or Wine Cooler Pot, made by Mason's Patent Ironstone China Company, of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1818.
This piece is substantial and heavily potted, weighing about 2.2 Kg un-packed.
The pot is circular with 12 vertical sections, sitting on a low foot with an everted rim. The two side handles are strongly potted and this piece is quite suitable for use or display, as an ice bucket, wine bottle cooler or perhaps as a vase or centre piece.
The piece is decorated in the Mason's recorded pattern called "Basket of Flowers" which is a vibrant floral pattern, hand polychrome enamelled over a sepia print on a white glaze. This pattern is illustrated on Page 30...
